My dear confined, Français, Françaises,
It is as military leader that I must intervene: the war against the coronavirus is not over. And it is therefore with a combat government, in commando mode, that all together we will achieve victory.
Already, we have taken the two most difficult measures: first, to confine ourselves, you and me, as much as possible, and second, to protect our businesses and our jobs with exceptional loans amounting to one hundred billion euros. You can imagine that these measures were not taken lightly and that they will have consequences. There will also be sacrifices to be made to restore our finances and that, I must inform you now.
The first goal of confinement is to save lives and I say: "all possible lives", without distinction or exception, old and young, sick and healthy, because my mission is to bring you all together as one man to victory. Yes, which army would allow itself to abandon its soldiers on the way? It would be a debacle and I do not want that: already, the number of sick people is declining, which proves that we have made the right decisions.
But I tell you right now: we will not give up anything. Not only will we win, but we will carry out all our ambitions, because that is our project!
I can already hear some people saying: we have to go back to work tomorrow, we have to de-confine immediately ... but that is a mistake. And we will not fall into this trap! Already, to organize elections at the beginning of the pandemic was a risk that my government took after consulting all the actors of the civil life but you know it, assessors were contaminated. Was it really useful? We believed it yesterday but today, in a new light, we think not: it was urgent, certainly, but not really essential to the life of the nation.
Now, should we reopen the markets so that the elderly can come to buy vegetables, for example, by exchanging a few coins that may be contaminated or by crossing people infected with coronavirus, risking their lives? How many of your parents or grandparents still risk perishing for our mercantile satisfaction? Have they not already paid the heaviest tribe, that of their lives by the thousands, as much as all the other age groups combined? How many missing people will there be on this markets? Already, many of our elders died in the Ehpad: do they also have to die at home, in the solitude of confinement? No, so I want to prioritize sheltering them for as long as it takes. Already, we are thinking about supply and delivery systems to ensure that all of our seniors receive the necessities to live comfortably but without exposing them further, with the help of mayors.
I also hear some who explain to me that we must abandon the major reforms, and in particular that of pensions? But no, it is not possible: I did not form a government of resigners. On the contrary, we must reform because we are convinced that it is in the interest of France and the French people.
Of course, other countries have made other choices, better or worse. We are also pleased that Boris Johnson has emerged unscathed from the disease. I learned that he spent time reading Tintin and playing sudoku while waiting to recover... Very good, but that's not my project: I'm not going to play belote with my ministers in waiting for things to happen without us. Because I have other ambitions and other priorities for my country that I love and that I will defend until the end.
Later, when we have overcome the disease all over the world, because we must not rejoice too quickly, we will organize a day of celebration which will also be a day of mourning to watch over our dead people and we will post in our streets, if you accept it, the face and the name of all those who lost their lives against the coronavirus because they deserve their commemoration and their monuments to the dead.
So I tell you: see you soon and long live France.
